Danny Archer has learned to survive. With charisma, money and gun violence, he makes his way through the Sierra Leone, shaken by civil war confusion, in which a human life is not worth a chanterelle. Danny smuggles diamonds to leave the dreary African continent behind forever. It does not matter that the gemstones are washed under inhumane conditions by forced laborers. Journalist Maddy Bowen has only contempt left for Danny. The young woman is the international backmen of the business with the bloody diamonds on her heels. She knows stories like those of fisherman Solomon Vandy. His village is one day invaded by the guerrillas, the surviving men are cruelly mutilated or taken to slave labor. Solomon's son Dia is abducted and brainwashed that shapes him into a child soldier. When Solomon discovers an exceptionally large diamond, he sees it as his last chance at life happiness. Only by chance does he escape the immediate shooting by his guard. And only by accident, the meanwhile imprisoned Danny learns about the stone.
